Twenty years on multiple fronts of the learning technology problem

Sixteen years inside a global medical device manufacturer meant three jobs at once. I owned the LMS. I wrote the governance and configuration standards that made its records defensible when an FDA auditor asked. And I led the instructional design team while still designing and building courses myself. I have spent the last six years doing those same three jobs for clients.

None of that was a career strategy. It was the job. In a regulated environment you cannot hand the platform to IT, the standards to compliance, and hope they meet in the middle. The person designing the training has to know how the system will carry it. The person answering the auditor has to be one of them. Consulting has not changed the requirement. Clients bring me in precisely because the seam between those roles is where their project has stalled.

Instructional designers who understand LMS architecture are uncommon. LMS consultants who have built custom-coded interactions and branching scenarios wired to detailed xAPI reporting are rarer. People who have written the governance holding both together, and then defended it in an FDA audit, are rarer still. Clients who have been burned by the handoff between those roles tend to find that combination worth paying for.
